A puppy spent a lonely night on the bank of Powers Creek before firefighters rescued it on Sunday.
The three-month-old lab-chow somehow got trapped 45 metres down a bank just off Glencoe Road. Residents living nearby heard it barking Saturday night, and a father and his son climbed down the bank in attempt to rescue the frightened animal.
It was too dangerous to get the puppy out, so firefighters were called.
“They couldn‘t see it, but they could hear it,” said Capt. Trevor Bredin of West Kelowna Fire and Rescue. “He dug himself into the bank, presumably to get away from coyotes.”
Four firefighters brought ropes and pulleys to rescue the animal. One of them rappelled down the slope while the other three held the main line and safety line.
They used a cradle made of rope to pull the dog to higher ground.
It was hungry and thirsty, but otherwise OK.
“He seemed fine. He seemed quiet – really well behaved,” Bredin said.
The firefighters handed the puppy to a neighbour, who returned it to its owner.
Firefighters are trained to rescue animals, but it happens only once or twice a year, Bredin said. Top of Page
