Hundreds of homes in Kelowna‘s Black Mountain area remained without natural gas service on Saturday after a Terasen Gas main was damaged Friday by an excavator working near Highway 33 East and Traut Road.

Terasen said 860 homes in the area lost service initially, but that service had been restored overnight to about 150 of those affected.

Restoring service is a laborious process. Terasen said the damaged pipeline had been repaired, but that crews had to visit each affected home to relight gas appliances and restore service. Technicians from around the province made their way to Kelowna to assist Terasen‘s local employees and minimize inconvenience to customers in the area.

Terasen focused on restoring service to the areas south of Highway 33 Saturday morning.

The company said its crews would leave tags on doors where no one was home and asked that homeowners phone 1-877-711-8877 to arrange for Terasen Gas to restore their service.

Once service had been restored to the areas south of Highway 33, crews were to begin visiting each home north of Highway 33.

Terasen said efforts to restore service to the entire area would continue through the weekend and could take several days.
