Already guaranteed a berth at the national basketball championship tournament, the UBC Okanagan Heat‘s women‘s team made it known they‘ll be legitimate title contenders by winning provincial gold on the weekend.
Host to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship March 17 to 20, the Heat defeated the Camosun College Chargers 69-67 on Saturday to claim the B.C. title in Nanaimo.
Trailing by 11 points at the half and by four points going into the final quarter, the Heat showed their composure and took the lead in the dying seconds. A missed three-pointer by Camosun at the buzzer left the Heat with gold.
Kelowna‘s Katie Woodman, who was the Heat‘s player of the game (20 points) in their 75-70 semifinal victory over Vancouver Island on Friday, led her team again in the title match. The Immaculata High School graduate scored 13 points, assisted on three baskets and had five steals for the Heat (16-2), who had finished second in regular-season play.
Meanwhile, the UBCO men took the bronze medal in their B.C. Colleges‘ Athletic Association provincial tournament.
Following an 82-63 loss to VIU in a semifinal matchup on Friday, the Heat came back to defeat the Capilano Blues 77-59 in the bronze-medal game on Saturday. Top of Page
