TORONTO - A story about a six-year-old native boy who leaves home with his sister to enter a residential school has won the $25,000 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award.

"Shin-chi’s Canoe" was written by Nicola I. Campbell of Vancouver and illustrated by Kim LaFave, who is from Roberts Creek, B.C. Author and illustrator will split the prize. It was chosen from five short-listed books written and illustrated by Canadians for children between the ages of one and 12.

The prize is administered through the Canadian Children’s Book Centre.
